About This Project

Hello! My name is Sophia, and I am a Girl Scout Ambassador. I am currently working on my project for the Gold Award, the highest achievement within Girl Scouts! My project aims to spread awareness of the importance of medication literacy with the goal of reducing medication errors.

In collaboration with a team of healthcare professionals, I have created educational handouts, posters and this website. In addition, I am attending community health events sponsored by Roper Saint Francis Healthcare. My efforts are focused on providing basic information that will help the people in my community take medications safely and effectively.

This project is important to me because I have seen the effects of low medication literacy first-hand when my grandmother passed away a few years ago. My Nana was an educated and well-read woman who made a medication error that ended up costing her life. My Nana was an avid, passionate reader and held a Bachelor's degree in English. Her retirement as a director of a government contract firm wasn't an excuse for her to slow down, it meant she had more time to do. She was the founder of multiple community book clubs, moderator for a community Think Tank discussion group, volunteer as a Guardian ad Litem, and President of a non-profit organization that supports local libraries. This illustrates that the harmful effects of low medication literacy can affect anyone from any educational background and demographic, and it is due to the simple lack of public education on this important matter.

If you'd like to access information regarding medication literacy, click on the tab at the top of the page titled "Medication Literacy".

A large part of my project is analyzing data collected via surveys! Please complete the two surveys located in the tab titled "Surveys".
